She is Professor of Environmental Physics at the Politecnico di Milano since 2009. She holds a Ph.D. in Technology Design for Environmental urban planning, she teaches in the Master’s Degree and specialized courses of training at the Politecnico di Milano. Since 2004 she developed many works in the field of building construction and renewable energy, and she has participated in several research programs and consultancy at the BEST Department and the Energy Department of Politecnico di Milano. In particular, she was involved in integrated design of energy-saving measures and environmental sustainability in buildings; solar energy with calculation methods and simulation tools, photovoltaic technology: applications in the construction field; analysis of energy use in buildings: modeling and comparison of different procedures; simulations of the performance thermophysical and lighting of buildings with software in dynamic conditions. Conducts research in the field of energy conservation and integration of renewables in the built environment. She is the author of publications in international journals and conferences on the theme of energy saving in buildings.

HEART is a holistic and innovative project in many ways. The project stands out for its great technological innovation and both design and social integration. In fact, it will address architectural, technological, plant and social aspects involving designers, producers and users. I consider the heart of the project is to demonstrate the energy use data starting from the actual state of the analysed case studies, to the redevelopment and the final use of the buildings.

2. Ing. Mario Maistrello (ZH Spin-off co-founder and partner)

master’s degree in aerospace engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. ZH Spin-off co-founder and partner. He has worked for several years in the aerospace market. Since 2002 he developed many solutions in the field of building construction and renewable energy, dealing with heat pump, geothermal systems and cogeneration and trigeneration systems and high efficiency waste heat recovery. He has joined many research activity and actively developed ready to market solution in the field of energy production and HVAC systems. He has been Energy Manager of Fiera di Milano. He has been consultant for many industry group such as Fondital S.p.a., Giacomini S.p.a., Rafmetal S.p.a., Elco Italia S.p.a., Energy Capital S.p.a. and Ariston S.p.a. He is in charge as Technical and Energy Manager of Amaga Energia e Servizi S.r.l. the Energy provider for the Abbiategrasso municipality. Since 2013 has joined in ZH engineering society as a fonder member.

HEART will be an integrated and fast deployable solution that would implement the state of the art technology to fulfil even future standards. The challenge is quite tough, but the development of a synergic and global solution regarding building efficiency I guess will be a significative leap to show how high efficiency even in existing building may be achieved.

3. Arch. Manlio Mazzon (Ph.D., Architectural Design and Supervisor)

graduated in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano in July 2008, has achieved a Ph.D in Technology and Design for Environmental and Building at Politecnico di Milano in January 2016, discussing a thesis on “Development And Use Of Dynamic-State Simulation Tools Suited For Energy Performance Optimization In The Integrated Architectural Design Approach”. He works mainly on Architectural Design and works supervisor, in commercial and residential building construction. In recent years, he focused on the development of a SketchUp-based interface for building energy dynamic-state simulation carried out by EnergyPlus. Also, he mainly dealt with building energy optimization during the design phase and with energy dynamic-state models and related evaluation tools. He actively collaborated with teaching activities, both in university and in professional training courses on zero energy buildings issues.

HEART is a strategic project to make building energy refurbishment easily available by most stakeholders, therefore it leads to practical application of strategies to reach European goals in building energy performance.

GUALINI SPA

1. Ing. Alberto D’Occhio (Engineer and Technical Manager)

got his MS degree in Building Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, with a thesis on structural pathologies of glass brick walls. He is now Engineering & Technical Manager at Gualini SpA. He has a professional knowledge focused on the application of advanced technologies in building envelopes, including production and management aspects in glass and metal industry. Expert of building physics, design of glass, steel and aluminium structures, he has managed the design and construction of large projects of windows and curtain walling in Italy, France, USA and Israel. He has attended the high-level training course FACE (Façades Architecture Construction Engineering) of EURAC research, related to complex technological façades. He actively collaborates with Politecnico di Milano in research activities on innovative technologies and materials and their application to the building envelopes.

HEART is a great opportunity to create an effective system where the best energy saving technologies are integrated. As a participant of the project, I will provide Gualini’s experience connected to advanced solutions in building envelopes and windows. The result of the research will bring to the market innovative products in terms of adaptability, cost-effectiveness and easier installation, in addition to create a new generation of aware professionals capable of applying a systemic approach to renovation.

2. Ing. Isaia Albertini (Engineer)

achieved his MS degree in Building Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, with a thesis on fiber reinforced concrete. He is actually II-Level master student at Scuola Master F.lli Pesenti, in the field of seismic engineering. After experiences abroad with academic purposes (France, India), in 2014 he landed to Gualini SpA, where he covers the role of engineer, focusing on thermal and structural calculation and optimization of advanced envelopes for curtain walling applications; he has participated in the design of large projects in Italy, France and USA. His interests range from structural engineering and FEM modeling to the study and application of innovative technologies to buildings.

HEART is a unique project to overcome a fragmented approach in energy saving field, that makes the building sector a great responsible for final energy consumption. The interconnection among partners lays the foundations for the renovation of the whole design-funding-construction process. Taking part in HEART as a member of Gualini team means realizing a research network, making possible the knowledge transfer to industry and concretely contributing to innovation in technical and economic aspects of energy retrofit.

3. Ing. Claudia Trabattoni (R&D Department)
